Fort Myers, Fla. -- Dr. Wilson Bradshaw, president of Florida Gulf Coast University, and Dr. Charles Hewett, vice president and chief operating officer of The Jackson Laboratory, announced today an agreement designed to explore areas of common interest between the university and the research institute.
FGCU President Bradshaw said, “This agreement formalizes our intent to identify areas of excellence and promise at FGCU, and we will match those areas with the strategic goals of The Jackson Laboratory. It is in these areas of common interest that formal educational programs and partnerships will develop, and through these partnerships, we will help strengthen regional economic development.”
Bradshaw indicated that teaching excellence at FGCU in areas that complement the work at The Jackson Laboratory--Florida makes academic program development an immediate area of common interest. Possible programs of study at the university include bioinformatics, genomics and genetic counseling. In addition, collaboration could lead to expansion of existing programs in clinical laboratory science and public affairs. The university also will consider potential programs of study in other areas related to personalized medicine.
Hewett said, “The Jackson Laboratory is delighted to join FGCU in this exciting new partnership. Together we will create new degree programs in genomics and science for students from this region, and we will explore collaborative research efforts, sharing of human and physical resources and opportunities for student internships.”
In addition to new programs of study, collaborative research, sharing of resources, and internships, the agreements include the possibility for JAX--Florida representation on FGCU advisory boards.
The Jackson Laboratory--Florida will be the catalyst for a 700-acre commercial, academic and research campus--a Biomedical Village--that will function as a live-learn-work-create community. The Village is expected to include pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical supply companies; a teaching hospital and specialized clinics; a university extension and science and math high school; and support businesses.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center with 1,300 employees in Bar Harbor, Maine, and Sacramento, Calif. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community. Its research staff investigates the genetic basis of cancers, heart disease, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, glaucoma, diabetes and many other human diseases and disorders, as well as normal development, reproduction and aging.
