Metuchen, NJ – Brighter Ideas Inc. (Bii), a Biotechnology organization focused on advancing fluorescent protein technology announced today that the Company has received allowance for their patent application in the United States. This IP is licensed exclusively through Rutgers University. Corresponding applications have already issued as patents in the United States; and other applications are pending in major countries worldwide.
Dr. William Ward, founder of Brighter Ideas, describes the advantages of the underlying technology as offering researchers “the ability to simultaneously identify and quantitate a broad range of proteases and their inhibitors in biological samples.” The technology, which is compatible with high-throughput screening, employs a proprietary relational database to measure multiple specific proteolytic activities in complex samples.
On October 8, 2008, the Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to Martin Chalfie, Roger Y. Tsien, and Osamu Shimomura for the discovery, cloning, and applications of green-fluorescent protein (GFP) from the bioluminescent jellyfish Aequorea.
Dr. Ward was instrumental in the basic research on GFP that led to these amazing scientific breakthroughs. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on GFP, and has focused his entire career on the study of this intriguing glowing protein. Since the mid 1970’s, Professor Ward has published over 100 articles, book chapters, and short papers on GFP and using GFP as an instructional aide has trained more than 1,500 industrial and academic scientists in protein purification.
In 1994, Dr. Martin Chalfie, one of the three Nobel Prize recipients, succeeded in cloning the gene for GFP into bacteria and round worms. The ground-breaking cover story that was published in Science magazine in February, 1994 http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/abstract/263/5148/802) by the Columbia University group (Dr. Ward was a co-author) has now become one of the ten most cited papers in all of biotechnology.
