August 18, 2011 Bar Harbor, Maine — Investor Brian Wruble has retired as chairman of The Jackson Laboratory's Board of Trustees after two terms, during which he worked to expand the institution's national presence.
Wruble, who has been associated with the nonprofit biomedical research laboratory for more than 20 years, was a general partner of Odyssey Partners, L.P., and was a founder of Odyssey Investment Partners, LLC, both private investment firms in New York. The newly elected chairman is Leo Holt, president of Holt Logistics Corp. in Philadelphia.
In August 2007, Wruble was elected to chair a newly reorganized Jackson Laboratory Board of Trustees. During his tenure, Jackson established a new facility in Sacramento, Calif.; added several major research buildings; explored expansion opportunities in Florida and other locations; recruited six new researchers; and launched a successful international search for a new President and CEO.
Wruble was also instrumental in raising the Laboratory's visibility in the national philanthropic community. In September 2008 the Laboratory held its first National Gala in New York City, raising more than $1 million. Under his leadership the institution's National Council support group grew into an organization with a nationwide presence.
"Brian Wruble has been a truly transformative leader of The Jackson Laboratory community," comments Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D., Jackson's executive vice president and COO. "Thanks to his guidance, the institution is now more widely recognized as a national leader in genetics research to improve human health."
Wruble, elected Jackson Laboratory chairman emeritus, also serves on a number of other boards. He is a trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., chairman of the Board of the Oppenheimer Funds (New York), and a past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts.
He was formerly CEO of the Delaware Group of Mutual Funds; chairman, president and CEO of Equitable Capital Management Corp.; and executive vice president and chief investment officer of The Equitable Financial Companies.
Wruble holds an M.B.A. from New York University, and Bachelors and Masters degrees in electrical engineering from Cornell University. He grew up in Kalamazoo, Mich., and resides now in Key West, Fla., with homes in Princeton, N.J., and Fredericktown, Md. He is married to Kathleen Wilson Bratton, and he has three children.
The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution and National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center with 1,344 employees in Bar Harbor, Maine, Sacramento, Calif., and other U.S. locations. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human diseases, and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
