BioGenerator Invests In $1.2 Million Round For Ag Tech Company, S4

Company leverages big data to improve agriculture decisions for customers

ST. LOUIS – December 17, 2015 – BioGenerator, an evergreen investor that creates, grows and invests in promising companies and entrepreneurs, has invested in S4, an ag tech company focused on applying big data to the agriculture industry.

S4 uses satellite images of farm fields around the world and data analytics to help its customers predict crop yields allowing them to make more informed decisions and better allocate their resources. Customers include insurance and re-insurance companies, ag suppliers, large food suppliers and other agribusinesses. S4’s technology provides its customers the data that they need to make smart decisions and reduce risk in ag-related businesses. A team based in Argentina founded S4 and following an investment from St. Louis-based The Yield Lab earlier in 2015, located its US headquarters in the region. S4 will use the funds to further enhance their data platform and ramp up deployment in the United States.

“S4 has an exciting platform at the intersection of agriculture and big data, a rapidly growing sector in the ag industry,” said Dan Broderick, vice president of BioGenerator. “S4 has developed a tool to enable players in the agriculture value chain to manage risk; the fact that it already has significant customer validation was appealing to BioGenerator.”

“With the growing need for more sustainable agriculture, the use of big data is becoming increasingly important.

BioGenerator views this as an area of future growth for our portfolio,” said Eric Gulve, president of BioGenerator. “St. Louis is recognized as an agriculture hub and BioGenerator and The Yield Lab are helping to attract high-caliber companies through their investment and accelerator programs, increasing the breadth and depth of quality startup companies and talent in the region.”
