In response to the recent outbreak of H3N2 canine influenza across the United States, IDEXX Laboratories Inc. developed a test to help diagnose it. Assisi Animal Health discusses this development.
The H3N2 Influenza Virus RealPCR Test enables accurate, quick and specific diagnosis for the new strain of canine flu sickening dogs throughout the United States. It may slow further spreading, according to an IDEXX announcement on May 7. The company created, tested and made available a new test that detects the H3N2 strain of canine influenza.
The H3N2 strain has an avian origin and has been in Asia since 2006. The recent widespread outbreak in Chicago and the surrounding areas began in early January.
Experts believe a dog carrying the virus arrived in Chicago from Asia, and it has infected thousands of dogs. The strain is highly contagious, and IDEXX recently confirmed cases in Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, New York, Texas, California and Alabama.
As soon as experts identified the H3N2 strain in the United States, IDEXX began researching the virus and developing a diagnostic test. In less than a month, the company created and validated the H3N2 Influenza Virus RealPCR Test, which allows reliable and fast testing for the specific strain causing the outbreak.
The H3N2 Influenza Virus RealPCR Test is included in the existing IDEXX Comprehensive Canine Respiratory Disease RealPCR panels, and this has no extra cost. The company made the test available for stand-alone diagnostics.
The H3N2 strain causes similar symptoms as other strains of canine influenza. Owners should be alert to coughing, lack of appetite, runny nose, fever, interstitial pneumonia and weight loss. Although rare, the virus can cause fatalities. Some canines are asymptomatic, and the virus can also affect felines.
