The agreement includes the United States, which has been criticized for unilateral AIDS funding decisions and which bars purchase of affordable generics in favor of over-priced brand name medications.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation President Michael Weinstein welcomed today's news with the following statement:
"AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the U.S. largest AIDS organization which also provides care to AIDS patients in Africa and Latin America, heartily applauds the decision by the world's richest nations to coordinate their contributions to global AIDS relief. This decision can only speed up the dismal progress that is currently not being made in saving lives worldwide. Anything and everything that can be done to cut through the bureaucracy must be done. We hope that this action will also end the senseless debate over the use of generics in developing countries. Anyone who is actually providing anti-retroviral care in the developing world knows that without generics millions will be consigned to suffering and needless death."
