Azathioprine Adds Nothing in IgA Nephropathy

Giving a low dose of the immunosuppressant azathioprine did not add any benefit to corticosteroid treatment for IgA nephropathy, a small randomized trial showed. Patients who received corticosteroids -- with or without azathioprine -- had a 35% reduction in proteinuria (from 2.00 to 1.30 grams/day, P<0.001), according to Claudio Pozzi, MD, of Ospedale E. Bassini in Milan, and colleagues.
