Cleveland Clinic Foundation To Host 2005 Medical Innovation Summit Oct. 24-26
CLEVELAND, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A sharp increase in the number of individuals requiring spinal and orthopaedic procedures and advances in medical technology are rapidly transforming how patients are treated for everything from back pain to bone loss.
The Cleveland Clinic will offer unparalleled insight into what's driving the world of orthopaedics and spine as it hosts the 2005 Medical Innovation Summit: Bench to Bedside and Back, Oct 24-26. The Summit, which is expected to convene more than 800 top-level industry executives, entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and clinicians, will focus on the medical, technological and economic trends reshaping the spine and orthopaedic markets. Industry leaders will offer their perspective through presentations, a number of panel discussions involving audience participation and two live, interactive surgery sessions.

This is the third year in a row the Clinic hosts this international gathering of health care CEO's and other decision-makers to discuss advances revolutionizing health care.
The Summit opens on Monday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m. with remarks by Delos M. "Toby" Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President of The Cleveland Clinic. Ohio Gov. Bob Taft is also scheduled to briefly address Summit attendees.
The opening session, "The Promise and Challenge of Medical Innovation," will be delivered by former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich. He will be followed by the renowned Bishop William Lawrence University Professor at Harvard Business School, Michael Porter, Ph.D., who will speak on "Redefining Health Care: Creating Value-Based Competition on Results."
Throughout the Summit the emphasis will remain on accelerating the rate at which the latest in medical technologies are available for the benefit of patients.
A panel discussion on commercializing Cleveland Clinic technology will take place on Tuesday at 1:40 p.m. Paul DiCorleto, Ph.D., Chairman of the Clinic's Lerner Research Institute; Michael O'Boyle, Chief Operating Officer for the Clinic; Michael Fonstein, Ph.D., CEO and President of Cleveland BioLabs; R.K. Khosla, CEO & President of Peritec Biosciences; William C. Mulligan, Chairman of the CCF Innovations Industrial Advisory Board and Primus Venture Partners; Mark Willig, President and CEO of PrognostiX; and Jay Yadav, M.D., Chairman of CCF Innovations and Director of Vascular Intervention at the Clinic; will be the speakers to participate.
In addition, on Tuesday two panels involving internationally recognized Cleveland Clinic physicians will feature the latest in new spine and joint technologies.
Gordon Bell, M.D., Vice Chairman of both the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Spine Institute at the Clinic, will preside over a panel discussion on new spine technologies at 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday. Isador H. Lieberman, M.D., FRCS(C), Director of the Clinic's Minimally Invasive Surgery Center, will also participate.
At 4:40 p.m., Jonathan Schaffer, M.D., who leads the Clinic's Advanced Orthopaedic Technology Group and Orthopaedic Research Center, will preside over a panel discussion on new joint technologies. Joseph P. Iannotti, M.D., Ph.D., Chairman of the Clinic's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Viktor Krebs, M.D., Head of the Section of Adult Reconstructive Surgery in the Clinic's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will also participate.
Among the advances and technologies the Summit will feature are minimally invasive hip surgery; minimally invasive shoulder replacement; tissue engineered cartilage; total shoulder replacement using new resurfacing technology; lumbar disc replacement, a new approach to treating mechanical back pain; cervical disc replacement, a new approach to treating mechanical neck pain or herniated discs; and minimally invasive surgery for lumbar fusion to treat degenerative spine conditions.
Live minimally invasive spine surgeries will be broadcast into the MBNA Conference Center on the morning of Tuesday, Oct. 25 beginning at 7:30 a.m. Edward C. Benzel, M.D., Chairman of the Clinic's Spine Institute will moderate.
Summit attendees will have the chance to view live minimally invasive joint surgeries on Wednesday, Oct. 26 starting at 7:30 a.m. Peter J. Evans, M.D., Ph.D., Head of the Section of Upper Extremity Surgery within the Clinic's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will moderate.
