Life Science Cares Announces Six New Grants
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 13 – Today Life Science Cares announced a second round of grants under the organization’s COVID-19 Response Fund, contributing an additional $270,000 to six nonprofit partners. That brings the total of grants from the new fund to $511,000 for 11 nonprofit partners.
“As the virus reaches the projected peak, we continue to see the disproportionate effect it, and the shelter-in-place advisory, have on our already vulnerable neighbors. Life Science Cares is proud to help feed, house and otherwise support our neighbors in need this week and as the need evolves,” said Executive Director Sarah MacDonald.
Life Science Cares organizes biopharma executives and employees to fight poverty in the community. LSC launched the COVID-19 Response Fund on March 18th and has raised $1.6 million to date. 100% of contributions to the fund go to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on Greater Boston-area residents in need.
Life Science Cares is working to award new grants on a rolling weekly basis during the coronavirus crisis, even as large and small donations continue to come in. This week’s grantees include Hope & Comfort, International Institute of New England, Just-A-Start, Pine Street Inn, Room to Grow and Tech Goes Home. Previous grantees included Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, CASPAR, Cradles to Crayons, Project Hope and Rosie’s Place.
Fundraising for the Fund has reached $1.4 million, including major donors Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Biogen Foundation, Sanofi Genzyme, Amgen Foundation, Collegium Pharmaceuticals, EMD Serono, Atlas Venture, Alnylam, Cambridge Trust, Evelo Biosciences, Moderna Therapeutics, Dicerna, Beam Therapeutics, Marsh & McLennan Agency, CRISPR Therapeutics, Surface Oncology, Takeda, Nimbus Therapeutics, Imara, Xilio Therapeutics, 5 AM Ventures, Syros Therapeutics, LMK Consulting, Kaleido Biosciences, Albireo, Magenta Therapeutics, Spero Therapeutics, Frequency Therapeutics, Translate Bio and many other companies and individuals.
The organization continues to leverage multifaceted partnerships with grantees, offering support well beyond the financial contribution, including virtual volunteer engagement, strategic support and in-kind donations of goods critical to ensure residents health and safety now.

Grant details:
Hope & Comfort: Providing hygiene supplies, particularly soap, to under-resourced youth and families.
International Institute of New England: Providing emergency funds to assist immigrant and refugee clients in paying rent and offering emergency food assistance.
Just-A-Start: Providing emergency support to help students and program participants meet basic needs while they complete their programs.
Pine Street Inn: Preparing and staffing a dorm at Suffolk University to be used to increase social distancing for the city’s homeless residents.
Room to Grow: Supporting young families with virtual visits by clinicians and gift cards for essential baby items and developmentally appropriate toys.
Tech Goes Home: Supplying critical technology hardware and access to the Internet for adult learners, immigrants, senior citizens, the recently unemployed and low-income families with children.
