Addgene Plasmid Database Integrated With Labguru

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL--(Marketwired - April 18, 2013) -

BioData Ltd., producers of Labguru lab and research management software, and Addgene, a non-profit plasmid repository, announced today the integration of Addgene’s 22,000-plasmid database to Labguru. In the past year, BioData has added more than 800,000 biological products and protocols to Labguru, thereby further helping improve research labs’ productivity.

Addgene, a Boston-based non-profit biorepository dedicated to facilitating scientific discoveries by operating a plasmid library for researchers, was established in 2004 to resolve difficulties encountered in identifying and obtaining plasmids mentioned in published journal articles.

“Both Labguru and Addgene help scientists conduct research more efficiently. This partnership is a natural extension of our motivations at Addgene and our efforts to help the research community better share, use, and track plasmids,” said Melina Fan, Addgene’s co-founder.

Integrating Addgene’s data into Labguru makes it easier for researchers to maintain their lab’s plasmid inventory. As lab members add Addgene plasmids to Labguru, supporting metadata automatically appears thereby saving time on basic data entry and, more importantly, ensuring accurate and detailed recordkeeping. Each plasmid record can also be quickly adapted for one’s research and assigned a location in the lab.

“Addgene integration provides researchers with more relevant information at their fingertips. As with our previous database agreements, we’re focused on our users. Plasmids available from Addgene are an excellent resource for cloning and gene expression assays; having them on Labguru makes them more easily accessible, visual, and searchable. We will continue to integrate more essential databases as Labguru evolves, based on the requests and needs of the community,” said Adam Sartiel, BioData’s CEO.

Addgene and BioData plan to extend their collaboration in the future to allow deposit of desired plasmids from inside Labguru directly to the Addgene database.

About Addgene

Addgene is a 501(c)3 non-profit biorepository dedicated to facilitating scientific discoveries by operating a plasmid library for researchers. Plasmids are DNA-based research reagents commonly used in the life sciences. Scientists need to share these reagents to collaborate and build upon the work of their colleagues. Addgene has worked with over 1,400 laboratories to assemble its current collection of 22,000 plasmids, and continues to solicit new deposits. Plasmids have been distributed to over 60 different countries and over 7,000 plasmids are shipped each month. By authenticating, storing, archiving, and distributing plasmids and their associated data, Addgene is creating a lasting resource for research and discovery scientists around the world.
