ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer (FLC) recently honored Director Joseph “Jim” H. Zarzycki with its 2006 Laboratory Director of the Year Award for the contributions Edgewood Chemical Biological Center (ECBC) has made in transferring technology to the private sector over the past year.
This is the second time Zarzycki has won this honor; he earned his first FLC Laboratory Director of the Year award title in 2002.
“Mr. Zarzycki is only the second multiple winner of this award-this is a pretty big accomplishment,” said Michele Chambers of the FLC Management Support Office.
Each laboratory director’s accomplishments during 2006 were evaluated in four ways: Laboratory History Related to Technology Transfer, Nominee’s Personal Involvement and Impact Internal to the Laboratory In Support of Technology Transfer, Nominee’s Personal Involvement External to the Laboratory in Support of Technology Transfer and Impact on Industry and The Best Example of Technology Transfer for the Laboratory in (Fiscal Year) 2006. A panel of judges from the National Advisory Council, comprised of industry representatives and FLC officials selected this year’s award recipient, according to Chambers.
Zarzycki was chosen for his dedication to bringing technologies to private industry and to the American public, his role in promoting the widespread dissemination of information about ECBC’s technologies and capabilities through the use of the Center’s award-winning website and the transformation of ECBC into a laboratory that assists any organization or community seeking protection against chemical and biological agents.
Despite the national recognition, Zarzycki views the 2006 Laboratory Director of the Year honor as one shared by his team and a tribute bestowed on the accomplishments of the entire Center.
“I am very excited and honored,” Zarzycki said. “But this really is an award for ECBC and I am just lucky enough to be able to represent us.” In addition to having his successes promoted in Technology Business magazine and other FLC publications, Zarzycki will be presented with his award during a ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 17 at the FLC National Meeting in Arlington, Texas.
Organized in 1974 and chartered by the Federal Technology Transfer Act of 1986 to promote and strengthen technology transfer, the FLC is a nationwide network of more than 700 major federal laboratories, centers, parent departments and agencies that provides the forum to develop strategies and opportunities for linking laboratory mission technologies and expertise with the marketplace. Among many things, the FLC develops and tests transfer methods, provides training and calls attention to national initiatives concerning technology transfer.
