Although they make great fodder for comedians, drugs to treat erectile dysfunction (ED), like Pfizer PFE +0.55%’s Viagra and Lilly’s Cialis, serve an important medical need. On a couple of occasions, after giving a talk on the biopharmaceutical industry, I have been approached by a person from the audience to tell me how important these drugs have been to him. In each case, the person said that he was a prostate cancer survivor who, after a prostatectomy, had his ED issues alleviated when prescribed these drugs.
Actually, the first TV commercials for ED drugs focused on the importance of these drugs in addressing what had been a poorly treated medical condition.
