Varian, Inc. Shows New Products At PITTCON(R) 2006

ORLANDO, Fla., March 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- New information rich detection systems and a revolutionary laboratory consumable demonstrate how Varian, Inc. applies technologies for solving the most pressing life science and chemical analysis challenges at the 2006 Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy (PITTCON).

At PITTCON, Varian, Inc. highlights the following recently introduced products:

* The 500-MS LC Ion Trap is a new liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer designed with unique technology advancements, such as SelecTemp(TM) and Enhanced Charge Capacity(TM) (ECC), to enable the optimum analysis of thermally labile compounds, including pharmaceutical products, drug metabolites, pesticides, and herbicides. SelecTemp features electronic control of the Atmospheric Pressure Ionization (API), which delivers optimum drying gas during gradient LC separations by controlling the temperature distribution throughout a complete analytical run. ECC extends the number of ions that can be simultaneously analyzed, resulting in greater sensitivity and reduced background interferences without compromising qualitative or quantitative results. Additionally, the patented unidirectional triple resonance scan function allows for up to 50 times more sensitivity in full-scan mode than other quadrupole mass spectrometers while scanning 10 times faster. * The 810-MS and 820-MS products are ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma -- Mass Spectrometer) instruments that improve the performance and throughput for elemental analysis of complex samples. Core to both products is Varian’s patented high efficiency 90-degree ion optics and double off axis quadrupole, delivering exceptionally low background noise and sensitivity for unmatched analytical performance. The 820-MS also features Varian’s state-of- the-art integrated interference management technology -- the Collision Reaction Interface (CRI). The new patent pending CRI, featuring advanced automated tuning and instrument setup routines, enables laboratories to easily achieve lower detection limits and more accurate quantitation for difficult elements in complex samples. * Two new OMIX(R) micro solid phase extraction (SPE) formats for bioanalytical research deliver improved performance and a faster, more streamlined sample preparation process. The first new format, OMIX micro extraction pipette tips operates in bi-directional flow to enable the extraction to occur in the pipette tip, eliminating the need for vacuum processing and allowing third party liquid handling platforms, like the TOMTEC(R) Quadra instruments to be used in a fully automated, walk-away capacity. A second new format, OMIX 96-well plates, features the same micro processing capabilities in an SBS-compatible device which interfaces with standard 96-well liquid-handling equipment used in bioanalytical research. OMIX enables analysts to reduce their elution volumes by a factor of up to 10 and still maintain equal or superior recoveries and reproducibility. This improvement offers significant throughput gains because direct injection of the small extracts achieved with OMIX eliminates the need for additional transfer and evaporation steps. * The VS Series leak detectors allow for greater access to advanced system intelligence at the push of a button to precisely locate and measure leaks in objects, such as power plant condensers, food packaging, automobile air bags, and medical devices. They are designed to meet the maintenance needs of industrial processing, parts manufacturing, high energy physics, and general research applications, offering the mobility and high performance specifications to find costly and inefficient leaks in equipment from accelerators and underground pressurized power cables to electron microscopes and surface analytical systems. In addition, the VS Series simplifies daily operation, minimizes operator error, and maximizes throughput and efficiency for semiconductor and small parts manufacturers, who use the detectors to check hermetic packaging, automotive parts, refrigeration circuits, and numerous other products.
