Sysmex America, Inc. Launches Software For Measuring Immature Platelets And Red Cells

MUNDELEIN, Ill., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Sysmex America today announced the release of specialized master software programs for the Sysmex XE-2100 hematology analyzers. “The programs, designed to measure immature platelet fraction (IPF) and reticulocyte hemoglobin equivalent (RET-He), assist with the diagnosis and treatment of altered platelet and red cell production,” said Peggy Barranco, Sysmex America Product Manager.

“The standard instrument measures a CBC with 5-part differential as well as a reticulocyte, nucleated red blood cell and optical platelet count. These parameters are now routine in hematology. However, with the IPF and RET-He software, the Sysmex XE-2100 can measure immature forms of platelets and quantify reticulocyte hemoglobin,” she said.

The recent FDA approval of the IPF (Immature Platelet Fraction), a Reticulated Platelet equivalent, is a direct consequence of nucleic acid staining with fluorescent dyes, adding to Sysmex’s unique position in Hematology. The IPF parameter was made possible by the fact that all of the cells sampled on the Sysmex X-Series instruments are exposed to fluorescent dyes with affinity for nucleic acids. “The Immature Platelet Fraction is an index of thrombopoiesis. It can determine the origin of thrombocytopenia by helping to distinguish between bone marrow failure and peripheral platelet consumption or destruction,” according to Ian Giles, M.D., Medical Director, Sysmex America.

The RET-He parameter provides a direct measurement of the mean reticulocyte hemoglobin content in picograms. Therefore, it is a useful parameter for early diagnosis of iron deficiency (iron restricted erythropoiesis), and for optimizing iron therapy.

“Release of the new master software programs for the XE-2100 indicates Sysmex’s commitment to our ongoing improvement of XE-2100 fluorescent flow cytometry technology. Our customers know and expect that Sysmex will continue to expand the clinical utility of our clinical laboratory products throughout the product’s life cycle,” Ms. Barranco added. The Sysmex XE-2100, the “flagship” product of the Sysmex hematology product line, is now in more than 6,000 laboratories worldwide.
