AUSTIN, Texas, May 13, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Serving Texas women since 1999, Superior HealthPlan is proud to recognize National Women’s Health Week, May 12–18. In conjunction with the annual awareness campaign, Superior recently launched a new online pregnancy resource guide and is on track to provide more than 3,000 car seats and diaper bags again this year.
“More than 45,000 of our members gave birth in 2018,” said Dr. David Harmon, Superior’s Chief Medical Director. “One of our long-standing goals has been to support our pregnant members because we know how important our services can be to these women. During National Women’s Health Week, we offer our continued support in making women’s health a priority.”
Women have unique health needs, and research shows that compared to men, they are more likely to use health services and prescription medication, and more likely to forgo care because of cost.
In Texas, there’s a particular focus on improving maternal health. Last fall, the state’s Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force released 10 recommendations, including encouraging a focus on at-risk moms and improving access to preventive care, because “the most common associated or contributing factor to maternal mortality included underlying medical conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.”
Superior has made concerted efforts to meet this challenge. As the largest Medicaid plan in Texas, Superior is providing extra support to women, including educational baby showers, where pregnant members learn about the health plan’s Start Smart for Your Baby® program, including important pre- and post-natal healthcare tips. Additionally, Superior offers extra benefits beyond Medicaid coverage like vision and dental care, and ensures that Care Management is available for those with more complex care needs, which allows Superior nurses to provide more personalized care. In 2018, Superior:
- Supported more than 90,000 women through Care Management.
- Launched a new pregnancy resource guide online.
- Distributed 3,200 convertible car seats, and more than 3,200 diaper bags.
- Hosted 117 educational baby showers in 24 cities across the state.
This is the 20th annual National Women’s Health Week, which is led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Office on Women’s Health. The commemoration is meant to serve as a reminder for women to make health a priority, as well as to take positive steps to incorporate healthier habits into their lives.
“Women’s health is something Superior has taken seriously from the time we first opened our doors 20 years ago,” said Harmon. “We know that no two women have the same healthcare needs, which is why we are proud to offer individualized care and additional support that addresses the physical and behavioral health needs of all those we serve.”
