SALT LAKE CITY, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- CORDA Technologies announced today that its Highwire tool for converting Web pages to PDF documents has been used by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to help interested parties create a report that directly reflects a visitor's individual interests regarding the nation's progress against cancer.
Since 2001, every two years, the National Cancer Institute releases an update to the Cancer Trends Progress Report, which provides an online summary of the current state of the fight against cancer. The revised and expanded cancer trends report can be found at http://progressreport.cancer.gov.
The Progress Report Tools section on the main page of this year's report links visitors to an index of topics where they may create instant, customized reports based on information derived from the full report. Visitors may choose to create a report populated with topics such as 2005 breast cancer screenings, cancer incidence, mortality rates, survival statistics and many others. The result is a PDF document that can be saved, printed or shared.
"The complete report totals 120 pages, and we used Highwire to help us make it possible for visitors to create tailored reports based on the specific information they wanted to see," said Dan Grauman, Information Technology Specialist for the National Cancer Institute.
This is made possible through an innovative use of Highwire(TM) from Corda Technologies. Highwire quickly and accurately transforms HTML Web pages into PDF documents. Highwire not only produces PDF documents on the fly, but it also reformats documents that were designed for the Web so they fit within the confines of a printed page. By producing these customized PDF reports, the NCI is not required to develop individual Web pages for each report, which would be impractical because of the infinite combinations of menu items visitors can choose from for a report.
The reports are dynamically generated and include only the portions of the Cancer Trends Progress Report -- 2005 Update that visitors select from the menu. Dynamically generating the report, as opposed to simply linking documents that have been previously saved, results in a document that contains the most current information on the Website. Since Highwire runs on the NCI servers, visitors to the site require nothing more than a Web browser with a free Adobe Reader(R) plug-in.
"The National Cancer Institute has a long history of implementing innovative processes that help elevate the education level about cancer by communicating the incidences and effects of this terrible disease," said Tom O'Dea, executive vice president of marketing for Corda Technologies. "We are pleased our product, Highwire, has been used in a way that can help inform and illuminate individuals on the progress we are making as a nation."
