Dr. Haris Jamil, NanoInk's Vice President, Stem Cell Research, is heading up the new division. He expressed high expectations, saying, "I am very excited about our progress in this enormously promising area of scientific research. We will be able to control differentiation of adult stem cells, by using Dip Pen Nanolithography® technology. As a result, we will be able to provide pharmaceutical and biotech companies with access to a large, renewable source of homogeneous stem cells -- an invaluable aid in component screening, toxicity testing, lead candidate validation, and avoiding adverse outcomes in later stages of development."
Recent studies have shown that only 30 percent of drug candidate compounds fail because of poor efficacy, but over 60 percent fail because of toxicity. This is the fundamental cause of the current high attrition rates in drug development. James M. Hussey, NanoInk CEO, commented, "NanoInk now has solutions to the problems that have limited the utility of adult stem cells. Our technology will lead to faster and more efficient drug discovery and development processes, with substantial cost savings." Looking ahead, he added, "In addition, this technology will offer opportunities in clinical diagnostics and will represent a giant step toward delivering on the promise of regenerative medicine."
