Merck & Co. would set up an R&D hub in the Bay Area and other key drug-development hotspots — mimicking strategies pursued by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson and others — as it tries to spark deeper ties outside its own labs, according to a plan outlined in The Wall Street Journal. The move would be an important one for the Bay Area, cementing the region’s status as an international base for drug development.
