Legislative Leaders, Sutter Caregivers Discuss Possible Strike At Capitol News Conference

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Aug. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Democratic leaders of the California Legislature will join Sutter Health caregivers, members of SEIU United Healthcare Workers, in a news conference Tuesday morning to discuss efforts to head off a possible strike involving some 8,000 caregivers at 13 Sutter facilities in Northern California.

"Some of our Sutter members have been without a contract for more than a year, working in an atmosphere poisoned by threats and intimidation," said SEIU-UHW Administrative Vice President John Borsos. "It's high time for Sutter to adopt the standards of patient care that other Northern California hospitals have agreed to, or we will be forced out on strike over its unfair labor practices."

The union's negotiating committee was prepared to issue a 10-day notice to strike a month ago, but the parties were brought together for a last-ditch effort with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. Those efforts have been unsuccessful.
