Everett, WA – October 16, 2009 – SNBL USA today announced it now offers juvenile toxicology studies in nonhuman primates (NHPs) and rats to cover all sub-adult age ranges from infants to adolescents.
SNBL USA’s NHP juvenile program offers routine, complete physical, behavioral and immunological assessments, and when required, learning and memory testing via an object discrimination and reversal task using a modified Wisconsin General Testing Apparatus (WGTA). The modified WGTA currently used at SNBL USA was developed in collaboration with Dr. Mari Golub of the California National Primate Research Center, UC Davis. While the WGTA has been commonly used in academia and primate research center settings since the 1930s, to date, its use is relatively new to the GLP pharmaceutical research setting.
As part of this program, SNBL USA has the necessary skill set required to manage young animals and the technical capabilities to perform study procedures through a well-established and extensive NHP developmental and reproductive toxicology (DART) program. Also, with SNBL USA SRC’s breeding program fully operational, SNBL USA is able to provide access to young NHPs across a range of ages, precluding the need to breed animals specifically for juvenile studies and greatly reducing study lead-in times.
“We have enhanced our juvenile toxicology program in direct response to specific requests to include learning and memory testing in certain instances of nonclinical drug testing,” said Norbert Makori, DVM, PhD, director, DART, SNBL USA. “With these recent requests, the stage is being set to enhance future drug development testing programs. I believe our successful implementation and utilization of the WGTA and our direct access to SNBL breeding centers positions SNBL USA to better serve clients and assist with their juvenile toxicology programs.”
