Every year, an estimated 300,000 people develop Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi carried by blacklegged ticks. Although the most common symptoms are fever, headache, fatigue and a rash, Lyme disease can become much more serious if it’s not treated with antibiotics.
