High-Dose Vitamins Flop In Preventing Pre-Eclampsia

Vitamin C and E supplementation don’t reduce the risk of pre-eclampsia in high risk women, according to a trial here, but result in a higher rate of low-birth-weight babies. In the Vitamins in Pre-eclampsia (VIP) trial, there was no difference in the rate of pre-eclampsia between women randomized to 1,000 mg of vitamin C and 400 IU of vitamin E and those in the placebo arm, reported Lucilla Poston, Ph.D., and colleagues of Kings College London in a study published today online by The Lancet.
