SAN DIEGO, April 20 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Gen-Probe Incorporated has submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a 510(k) application for use of the fully automated, high-throughput PROCLEIX(R) TIGRIS(R) system to screen donated human blood, tissue and organs for West Nile virus (WNV) with the PROCLEIX WNV assay, the Company announced today.
The PROCLEIX WNV assay was approved by the FDA in early December for use on the enhanced semi-automated PROCLEIX system (eSAS).
Selected U.S. blood centers have used the TIGRIS system to screen about 3.6 million donations for WNV under Investigational New Drug applications since the summer of 2004. The TIGRIS system can process 1,000 blood samples in about 14 hours, facilitating testing in smaller pool sizes, including individual donor testing. In addition, the TIGRIS system incorporates state-of-the-art automation and process controls that maximize the accuracy of results while minimizing hands-on time for operators.
WNV is a mosquito-borne virus associated with a human form of the disease ranging from mild, flu-like symptoms to severe neurological disease.
The TIGRIS system is approved in many countries outside the United States to screen donated human blood, tissue and organs with the PROCLEIX ULTRIO(R) assay.
PROCLEIX and ULTRIO are trademarks of Chiron Corporation, Gen-Probe’s worldwide blood screening partner. TIGRIS is a trademark of Gen-Probe.
