"We will invest US$15 million to design this system in the GE John F Welch Technology Centre in Bangalore, which will be led by 1,200 scientists and engineers," GE Healthcare, South Asia, President and CEO V Raja on Friday told reporters here.
He said, the company has initiated design and development of a PET/CT imaging system that will cost 30-40 per cent less than other currently available molecular imaging systems.
This strategic initiative will help strengthen the company's molecular imaging business in India and promote early detection of cancer in tier II and III cities, he said.
"If India has to shed the tag of cancer capital of the world, we will need to create more innovative technologies that are accessible and affordable to all," GE Healthcare Vice President, Molecular Imaging Business, Terri Bresenham said.
The new PET/CT is expected to be commercially available in India and globally in 2014, Raja said.
Meanwhile, GE Healthcare has installed Alcyone Technology - a nuclear cardiology platform - in India that lessens the cardiac scan from 30 minutes to just eight minutes and at reduced radiation dose.
