Four Popular New Year’s Resolutions That Science Says Don’t Work

This is a tricky year for new year’s resolutions. Over the last few months scientists have reported results of a handful studies designed to show how fast our extra pounds, salt, cream and butter were killing us. In a surprising twist, they couldn’t find much evidence that many of our most notorious health vices were killing us at all. As for health-related virtues, even exercise proved a disappointment: When scientists put subjects on treadmills to see how fast they would lose weight, most didn’t, and some got fatter.
