SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 14, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Fluxion Biosciences, a leading developer of automated solutions for cellular analysis in life sciences research and drug discovery, today announced that it has launched a new BioFlux plate for studying infections caused by the long-term use of catheters. The new plates are available immediately. Silicone rubbers such as PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) have been used since the 1960’s in a variety of medical devices, including catheters. Bloodstream and urinary tract infections associated with catheters are some of the most prevalent infections of patients in healthcare facilities. These new PDMS plates provide a convenient model for the study of this important condition and can serve as a platform for the development of preventive approaches. “An estimated 250,000-400,000 catheter-related bloodstream infections occur every year in the United States, with a very high mortality rate,” said Bryan Haines, Ph.D., Global BioFlux Product Director. “Indwelling devices are usually associated with microbial biofilms, which can be challenging to study in vitro. These new plates simulate the proper in vivo catheter biofilm conditions, including shear force, nutrient delivery, and substrate material. We are very excited to provide these plates to the medical device and biofilm research communities.” The new silicone-based plates are available in both 24 and 48-well configurations, and are compatible with all BioFlux system configurations.
