WATERTOWN, Mass., Sept. 2, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For the fifth year in a row, pediatricians ranked temporal artery thermometry (TAT) #1 in overall preference over any other thermometry method, including rectal, according to a recent survey of physicians. Of the 280 survey respondents, 35 percent ranked TAT number one based on overall preference, while only 16 percent ranked rectal thermometry as their overall preference.

“Pediatricians prefer temporal artery thermometry not only because of its ease of use, but because of the well-established body of scientific evidence supporting its accuracy,” said Dr. Francesco Pompei, CEO of Exergen Corporation. “As a result, millions of patients, parents and children no longer have to endure the unpleasantness of rectal thermometry and other invasive methods.”

The survey also captured pediatricians’ commentary about temporal artery thermometry. According to one physician respondent, “I am a strong believer in temporal artery thermometry due to accuracy and ease of use. I’m loyal to the extreme due to its research performed by Johns Hopkins and Harvard institutions.” Another respondent said, “Because of the ease of use and fair accuracy and ability to use in any age group, I use and recommend temporal artery thermometer.”

The survey was conducted by Pragmatic Research, Inc. and pediatricians were not told that it was sponsored by Exergen. The results were consistent with additional, independent research involving nurses and other healthcare professionals in various clinical settings.

Exergen markets two models of the TemporalScanner thermometer: a professional version for doctors’ offices and hospitals, and a consumer model sold in major retailers nationwide. More than one billion temperatures are taken each year with the TemporalScanner. It is used in thousands of hospitals, clinics and pediatricians’ offices across the country, as well as in millions of homes. In addition to being the #1 preference of pediatricians in the US, it is the #1 preference of nurses, and the #1 selling retail thermometer. The Exergen TemporalScanner’s performance is supported by more than 50 peer-reviewed published studies covering all ages from preterm infants to geriatrics and all care areas from hospitals to homes.
