Notthingham’s ambition to establish a reputation as a life science city was given a boost by the closure of AstraZeneca’s Loughborough facility. Twenty-two life science firms have been set up in the city by former AstraZeneca scientists, while others have been able to grow because of the availability of skills and expertise. About 1,200 jobs were lost when AZ closed its world-class Charnwood research and development facility to cut costs.
