China Institutes Heavy Fines for Harmful Products

July 27, 2007 – In unusually swift action, the State Cabinet of China voted into law new rules governing food and drug safety, the passage occuring only one day after reading a draft of the legislation. The rules call for fines of up to 20 times the income derived from goods that are found to be harmful. In addition, the legislation establishes stronger supervision of businesses, and calls for more cooperation between the many different agencies that are responsible for enforcing existing laws.
