BioUtah and Utah’s life sciences industry is proud to congratulate one of its own—Fred Lampropoulos, founder and CEO of Merit Medical—who will receive the Salt Lake Chamber’s 40th Giant in our City award today, during an evening ceremony at the Grand America Hotel.
“Fred’s leadership, spirit and dedication to innovation, patient care, and giving back to our communities have made Merit Medical a remarkable Utah success story,” said Kelvyn Cullimore, president and CEO of BioUtah. “He is most deserving of this prestigious award.”
“Fred is a titan in Utah’s life sciences industry,” said Rob Etherington, CEO of Clene Nanomedicine, and chair of the BioUtah Board of Directors. “He has built a homegrown med tech powerhouse that is making a difference in people’s lives, creating jobs and putting Utah on the map as a hub for the life sciences.”
Founded in 1987, Merit Medical set out to build the world’s most customer-focused healthcare company. Its first product was the polycarbonate coronary syringe, which was designed to replace the glass and polypropylene models of the day. Now, 30 years later, Merit Medical is a leading manufacturer and marketer of disposable medical devices used in diagnostic, interventional and therapeutic procedures, holding over 800 patents and pending applications.
With manufacturing facilities in the United States, The Netherlands, France, Ireland, Mexico, Brazil, Singapore and Australia, Merit Medical has close to 6,000 employees and generates nearly $1 billion in global revenues. The company prides itself on maintaining an entrepreneurial mindset to continue to develop cutting-edge products. Merit Medical is also an industry partner of the Medical Innovations Pathways program, which helps prepare high school students for careers in the life sciences.
Over the years, Lampropoulos has received numerous awards, including the Governor’s Medal for Science and Technology. He has also been inducted into the Utah Business Hall of Fame, the Utah Technology Hall of Fame, and the University of Utah College of Science Hall of Fame.
