Baxter International, Inc.'s Board Appoints New Corporate Officers, Including Heads Of Regional Businesses In Latin America And Asia Pacific

DEERFIELD, Ill., May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Baxter International Inc. today announced that its board of directors has appointed four new corporate officers to the company’s executive management team. Those named include Gerald Lema, president of Baxter Asia Pacific, Marcelo A. Mosci, president of Baxter Latin America, Michael J. Baughman, corporate controller and David P. Scharf, corporate secretary.

“Since joining Baxter last year, Gerald and Marcelo each has contributed greatly to the development of Baxter’s organization and financial performance of their respective regions,” said Robert L. Parkinson, Jr., Baxter’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Through their leadership we now have in place strong regional operations in Latin America and Asia Pacific that we will leverage on an integrated global basis to generate value and growth. With the appointments of Mike and David, we are recognizing the significant contributions they have made to Baxter’s corporate finance and legal functions, respectively, since they assumed their roles last year.”

Before joining Baxter in 2004, Lema, 45, held numerous positions in sales, marketing and general management at Abbott Laboratories. He most recently served as corporate vice president, Abbott Asia Pacific, and as chairman and representative director of Abbott Japan, in Tokyo. Lema’s career includes 18 years of pharmaceutical, diagnostics and healthcare experience throughout the world. Lema earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from Universidad del Valle, Colombia, and a master of business administration from Tulane University’s Freeman School of Business.

Prior to joining Baxter in 2005, Mosci, 48, was with GE, most recently as senior general manager of the Global X-Ray business at GE Healthcare. In addition, he held a number of senior management positions with GE’s healthcare and transportation divisions. Before joining GE, Mosci held management roles at several Brazil and U.S. based companies, including Ferrovia Centro Atlantica, Komatsu Dresser Co. and Nicamaqui Equipamentos. Mosci is a graduate of Brazil’s Universidade Catolica de Belo Horizonte, where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering.

Baughman, 41, joined Baxter in 2003 as vice president corporate audit and has served as corporate controller since March 2005. Prior to joining Baxter, Baughman had a 16-year career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, during which he held a number of senior roles, including audit partner and partner in the firm’s mergers and acquisitions practice. Baughman is a Certified Public Accountant and has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Michigan.

Scharf, 38, who has been serving as associate general counsel and assistant corporate secretary since joining the company last year, was also named corporate secretary. Prior to joining Baxter in 2005, Scharf served as associate general counsel for Guidant Corporation. Prior to Guidant, Scharf was assistant general counsel with Sears, Roebuck and Co. and an associate with Baker & Daniels. Scharf received his law degree from the University of Chicago, and his undergraduate degree in finance from Indiana University.
