HOPKINTON, Mass., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, announced today the Saint Raphael Healthcare System recently deployed the EMC Centera(TM) content addressed storage (CAS) solution to archive and quickly recover fixed content, including x-rays and other medical images. Centera ensures the authenticity of patient records and provides Saint Raphael, a 511-bed academic health science center affiliated with Yale University School of Medicine, with online access to information to speed decision making and maximize patient care.
Dedicated to providing sophisticated, yet compassionate care to residents in greater New Haven, Conn., Saint Raphael uses leading-edge technology for the diagnosis and treatment of disease, illness and injury. Saint Raphael deployed Philips Medical System’s Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) in conjunction with EMC Proven Solutions to manage and archive patient x-rays, which are critical for improving clinical outcomes and organizational efficiency throughout and between the hospital and its physicians and other clinicians. Rather than relying on tape, DVD or optical for storing this data, Saint Raphael purchased two Centera systems with 32 terabytes of storage to speed access to long-term, archived exam information. Centera is the optimum CAS solution for retrieving fixed content in the actual, unaltered way it was originally stored.
Mike Hendrick, Director of Technology and Operations at Saint Raphael Healthcare System, said, “Our PACS solution enables immediate access to information needed to make critical clinical decisions in real time and reduces costs associated with film processing and courier activities. However, traditional long-term archive technologies used with PACS, such as tape, may take days to retrieve a historical file, which is not acceptable. Centera achieved a faster retrieval time than any other vendor solution and its ease of use enables IT personnel to focus on end user issues.”
Additionally, to ensure access to critical patient records, Saint Raphael uses EMC Symmetrix(R) networked storage platform as the tier for short-term information generated and accessed by the Hospital Information System (HIS) application. For business continuity, Saint Raphael previously leveraged tape, which would require travel time to retrieve the offsite tape and time to recover the data from the tape. Today, Saint Raphael replicates data from one Centera to another at a different campus building and plans to purchase Symmetrix with EMC SRDF(R) (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) for future business continuity initiatives.
Hendrick said, “EMC demonstrated through testing and real-world healthcare provider references that Centera would integrate easily, exceed our expectations, surpass other technologies and remain transparent to our users. This unmatched functionality is essential for the healthcare industry, especially given today’s HIPPA, state and federal regulatory environment.”
