ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- PhDx Systems, the industry’s leading provider of technology and services for measuring spine and orthopaedic medical outcomes, today announced that it has expanded its contract with William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Mich. Under the new agreement, Beaumont will use the PhDx(R) Orthopaedic Application to collect and analyze hip and knee arthroplasty outcomes data from 12 orthopaedic surgeons and their 3,500 patients. Since 2001, the hospital has been using the PhDx(R) Spine 2000 application for Low Back and Cervical surgical procedures to collect outcomes data from four spine surgeons on their 1,300 patients.
“Collecting outcomes data is a key part of our commitment to providing our patients with excellent care,” said Harry Herkowitz, M.D., chief of orthopaedic surgery and chairman of the hospital’s spine surgery fellowship program. “By working with PhDx, we have access to quality improvement tools that allow us to collect data for research projects, evaluate our outcomes in relation to those of peer centers around the country, and improve treatment and patient care.”
As part of its state-of-the-art orthopaedic program, Beaumont Hospital will be opening a newly constructed orthopaedic unit in September 2004 that includes a specialized orthopaedic nursing unit, 20 high performance operating and procedure rooms and an orthopaedic learning center for interdisciplinary training, simulation and distance learning.
“PhDx is an easy, user-friendly tool to use, for the physicians, office staff, and for our patients,” said Perry Greene, M.D., Beaumont orthopedic surgeon. “We know from experience that using their technology will give us access to excellent follow-up data.”
Like the PhDx spine application already in place, the PhDx orthopaedic application automates the outcomes data tracking process, eliminating paper spreadsheets and records while creating longitudinal data outcomes studies. Each patient’s activities, medical history and clinical information related to orthopaedic procedures are collected, reported and tracked. All information is stored in a single database, giving physicians and hospital administrators real-time access to outcomes reports that provide information about patient satisfaction, clinical measures, health status and cost markers.
“We’re very pleased to have this opportunity to expand our relationship with Beaumont Hospital and to offer them some additional benefits of working with one source for their data outcomes collection,” said Geoff Mather, PhDx president and CEO. “Now, both the spine and orthopaedic surgeons will have valuable comparative data at their fingertips. In addition, because the hospital’s research coordinators work with just one company, they and their patients benefit from having standardized data collection procedures, which enables everyone to work more efficiently.”
Both the PhDx spine and orthopaedic applications can be configured to meet the specific needs of individual customers and easily integrate with existing patient information and legacy systems. The PhDx Orthopaedic Application includes modules for arthroscopy outcomes, hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, shoulder arthroplasty and trauma. The PhDx Spine Application includes modules for low back surgical care, cervical surgical care and conservative spine care.
