Delegates from academia and industry flocked to see the world’s first commercial, cryogen free, 7.0T, preclinical MRI imaging system, which went on display for the first time at the recent joint ISMRM/ESMRMB* meeting in Milan, Italy and the SNMMI* meeting in St Louis, United States.

The meetings were a huge success for MR Solutions who not only showcased the brand new 7.0T scanner to hundreds of visitors from across the world. Visitors to the shows were also surprised to learn that soon one machine could undertake a variety of imaging techniques, including MRI, SPECT, and PET with MR Solutions accessing its imaging systems with in line or ‘in the bone’ modalities.

The cryogen free technology provides a number of advantages. Firstly and most importantly they offer superior soft tissue contrast and molecular imaging capabilities. Secondly they are very competitively priced, as there is no need for all the cryogen cooling equipment. Thirdly because they have a very small stray magnetic field they can be placed close to other scanners for much more efficient operation and fourthly because of the lack of liquid helium cooling and required safety equipment the scanners are easy to install and need no expensive building alterations.

The 7.0T preclinical MRI system has a bore diameter of 17cm. A range of larger bore, 7T scanners will be announced later in the year.

MR Solutions has in the last few years led the field in technology in the preclinical imaging market with a range of groundbreaking innovations. At the last ISMRM meeting held in 2013 they showcased the first commercial cryogen free 3.0T MRI range.

Physicist and CEO of MR Solutions Dr David Taylor said: “We are very excited by the overwhelming interest which has been shown in our latest scanning technology. As we have been at the forefront of the industry for over 30 years with over 1000 sales across the world – scanners and spectrometers - this is a fantastic achievement for us and a revolutionary step forward for preclinical researchers.

“We have combined our commercial success with challenge based thinking to come up with solutions which deliver what our customers want – first rate images that are relevant for their particular applications. We are in the business of supporting our clients’ needs, not just building machines. I think it is one of our key differentiators and why we have been able to not only achieve so many groundbreaking developments in the last 18 months but also bring down the costs.”

MR Solutions has been able to dispense with the usual liquid helium cooling system by using a revolutionary magnet design. This enables the use of a standard low temperature fridge to cool the magnet to the required 4 degrees Kelvin (minus 269 degrees C).

The magnet in the new 7.0T MRI system has an elliptical field of view, which makes it even more suitable for research purposes.

These technological advances have dramatically reduced the cost of these powerful systems to make them extremely competitive.

MR Solutions has offices in the UK, North America and Asia as well as a network of agencies across the world.
