In the past, the value of neonatal EEG monitoring was limited because there was no effective treatment for the abnormalities detected; however, a new technique called therapeutic hypothermia has been proven to be useful for mild to moderate cases of HIE.
“There remains considerable debate about therapeutic hypothermia,” says David Plow, senior analyst at MRG. “Issues still under investigation include how best to administer the treatment, the safety of the procedure, and whole- body versus head cooling. Nevertheless, some studies show promising results. If widespread adoption of infant cooling occurs, it may become a significant driver of growth for neonatal EEG monitoring.”
