Kate Carr To Lead Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure As President And CEO

WASHINGTON, and SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC2) announced today that Kate Carr, former President and CEO of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, has been named President and CEO of ABC2, effective immediately. Ms. Carr replaces John Reher, who will soon be launching a venture capital firm that will focus on investing in innovative companies developing treatments for a range of brain diseases.

Steve Case, Chairman and CEO of Revolution and Chairman of ABC2, will include an update on ABC2’s progress as part of the “Revolutionizing Health” keynote speech he is delivering at the JPMorgan Healthcare Conference, now underway in San Francisco. Case will be speaking at 12:00 noon (Pacific time) on Tuesday, January 10, in the Grand Ballroom at the Westin St. Francis Hotel.

“Under John’s leadership, ABC2 has brought an entrepreneurial spirit and approach to cancer research, the success of which can be measured by the number of potential new therapies the organization has helped advance into clinical development,” Mr. Case said. “We are thrilled to have a new leader of Kate’s caliber at ABC2. Her passion for our mission and her experience building partnerships as an advocate in the nonprofit and government sectors will be invaluable as we intensify our efforts to hasten a cure for brain cancer. Her track record building the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation makes her the perfect leader for ABC2 as we prepare to expand.”

Ms. Carr said, “Brain cancer is one of the last great challenges in cancer research. Leading ABC2 is a tremendous opportunity to collaborate with the best and brightest minds in the field -- including researchers at academic medical centers, NIH, FDA, and industry.”

Ms. Carr brings a wealth of experience in politics, government, and public-private partnerships. Before serving at the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation for seven years, she was chief operating officer for the Welfare to Work Partnership and a special assistant to the president in the Clinton White House, overseeing outreach and partnerships with the business community.

ABC2 (http://www.abc2.org) was founded May 2001 by Dan and Steve Case and their families, along with leading scientists and entrepreneurs. In order to accelerate progress in what has been an underserved field of research, ABC2 applies a unique approach that provides researchers from all backgrounds with the support they need to make critical breakthroughs in brain cancer research. ABC2 aims to raise awareness about brain cancer and help mobilize critical scientific research through research grants and partnerships.
