Officials with Inova Regional Trauma Center have suspended their enrollment in a clinical trial that is part of a national study to evaluate a blood substitute in severely injured and bleeding patients. The study is being conducted to see if PolyHeme, developed by Northfield Laboratories of Evanston, Ill., reduces mortality. Officials decided to withdraw from the study after unfavorable media reports and meetings. Inova didn’t want to continue with the study until further information became available.
