Fraunhofer Release: Experts Discussed New Developments In The Field Of Stem Cell Research And Cell Therapy

From 9th-10th October 2014, approximately 200 scientists met in Leipzig Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology for the ninth “Fraunhofer Life Science Symposium”. The bi-annual event was held this year under the theme “Medical and stem cell products for medical use.”

Biomedical research has identified many new and promising approaches for prevention and treatment of serious diseases in recent years. The topic of stem cells plays a major role. The symposium was organized by the Fraunhofer IZI offers international scholars a platform to discuss the latest developments in this area.

The scientific program consisted of three major subject areas: production, production and application. In the first part met with, among other things, the lecture by Sarah Ferber (Centre for Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel) with great interest: “Reprogramming the endocrine pancreas; autologous cell replacement therapy for diabetic patients. " She talked about the possibilities of converting liver cells into insulin-producing cells. This method could possibly even patients with type 1 diabetes help, in which the misdirected immune system destroys the body’s own insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.

Another highlight was the presentation by Nicole to Nieden (University of California Riverside, Riverside CA, United States): “Stem cell-assisted drug discovery and risk assessment.” This showed in various ways, such as stem cell cultures in drug development and risk assessment are used. It involves the development of new methods and procedures as early as possible the process of drug development and with greater safety than before predictions about the effectiveness (toxicity) in humans.

The Fraunhofer Life Science Symposium brings together up to 200 participants from industrial, academic and clinical institutions that exchange information on various topics focusing on the latest technologies, trends and developments. It is organized by the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology. For more information www.fs-leipzig.com .
