SAN FRANCISCO, March 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Shield of California today announced the appointment of Edward Cymerys as senior vice president and chief actuary. Reporting to Chief Financial Officer Heidi Kunz, Cymerys will lead the department that provides quantitative analytical support to a broad array of departments and business units within Blue Shield.
Cymerys comes to Blue Shield with extensive experience in the health care industry, having spent over 20 years in the California marketplace with a focus on actuarial, pricing and underwriting. Prior to joining Blue Shield, Cymerys served in various roles with PacifiCare Health Systems including senior vice president of pricing and underwriting. In this capacity, Cymerys was responsible for pricing and underwriting of 3 million member commercial HMO, POS and PPO plans and the benefit pricing and actuarial support for Medicare+Choice products covering 700,000 members. Cymerys also worked with Towers Perrin Health Industry Consulting and Aetna Life Insurance as a consultant and vice president respectively.

Cymerys received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Vermont and is a current fellow of the Society of Actuaries. He is also a member of the American Academy of Actuaries and the Financial Solvency Standards Board of the California Department of Managed Health Care.
