“Patient safety is of the utmost importance at Cottage Health System and our goal is to continually improve it, as well as the patient/family experience during a stay at our facilities,” said Alberto Kywi, chief information officer at Cottage Health System. “We also continually seek to recruit and retain high-quality caregivers and we believe that a strong clinical information system like Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA supports our goals in these areas.”
Rollout of Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA is planned for all three Cottage Health System locations. Once the implementation is complete, clinicians at Cottage Health System will utilize Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA throughout the enterprise for order entry and results viewing. The advanced clinical solution will provide immediate access to patient medical records, lab results and integrated clinical content at the point of care.
Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA extends support for physicians through the inclusion of advanced functionality for clinical decision support, structured notes, medical necessity checking, prescription writing and medication management configuration. In time, Cottage Health System will implement all of these capabilities. Version 3.5 XA of Sunrise Clinical Manager also includes significant capabilities in remote access services, furthering the Eclipsys vision of “anytime and anywhere” accessibility by physicians.
According to Kywi, the CHS clinical implementation group teamed predominantly with remote Eclipsys resources to successfully complete what he regards as a fairly significant upgrade. “Our own clinical informatics specialists were able to leverage their ever-growing knowledge of Sunrise Clinical Manager to minimize our need for Eclipsys resources,” Kywi said. “However, when we did have questions or issues, Eclipsys provided skilled, experienced resources who responded in a timely manner and this approach worked well for us.”
“Eclipsys is proud to provide the advanced software foundation for Cottage Health System to achieve its clinical information and patient safety goals,” said Eugene V. Fife, Eclipsys chairman, president and chief executive officer. “It is exciting to see a leader like Cottage Health continue to make groundbreaking advancements in achieving the connected enterprise that is so important to the future of healthcare delivery and improved patient care.”
Current and Future Eclipsys Product Deployments
Cottage Health System also relies on Eclipsys solutions for revenue cycle management. Since implementing Sunrise Access/Patient Financial Manager(TM) in 1999, the organization has achieved the following benefits:
* Increased average monthly collections from $14 million in 1999 to $21 million in 2005
* Year-over-year, net days outstanding for receivables have been reduced, achieving the organization’s goal of 58 days in 2004
Cottage Health System also uses Eclipsys Sunrise Critical Care(TM) for clinical documentation at all facilities and has achieved an almost 100- percent paperless environment for nursing and ancillary clinical documentation.
When the Sunrise Clinical Manager 3.5 XA rollout has been completed at the Santa Barbara facility, Cottage Health System will turn its attention and resources to the migration of clinical documentation from Sunrise Critical Care to Sunrise Clinical Manager. When complete, this will provide a single integrated source for all patient information.
