HOUSTON, Jan. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Dr. Carlos Puig, a leading hair-restoration professional, recently hosted a panel discussion at the 18th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japan Society of Clinical Hair Restoration. The conference took place from November 23-24, 2013, and was hosted by Akira Takea, MD. Dr. Puig’s panel discussion examined surgical hair transplantation and restoration techniques in Asian patients. Other topics at the conference included basic hair growth, genetics, tissue culturing, and surgical and medical interventions. Roughly 100 physicians and MDs attended the event.

Tokyo was a fitting location for a conference on hair restoration because Japan has become a hotbed of research on the subject. Earlier in 2013, Japanese scientists managed to create entirely new hair follicles from a type of stem cell. Within two to three weeks after their experimental procedure, hair tissues began to form. The scientists hoped the development would lead to more effective hair-loss treatments. And in 2012, CBS News ran a report about Japanese researchers who had grown hair on a bald mouse. (Their efforts were similar to those by a California-based team, which restored hair growth in mice by giving them chemical stress-blockers.)

At the conference, beyond leading his own panel, Dr. Puig participated in other panels as well. As Dr. Puig is a founding member of the International Society of Hair Restoration, and has also served as the chair of the organization’s Fellowship Training Committee, his panel discussion was well-attended and insightful. Dr. Puig’s other titles include Past President of the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.
