SAN DIEGO, April 5, 2016 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The World Health Organization's World Health Day will fall on April 7 this year and has a centralized theme of "Beat Diabetes". The Diabetes Research Connection (DRC), a donor-driven, non-profit organization that focuses on innovative diabetes research and funding for early-career scientists, will celebrate World Health Day by helping stem individual research projects that aim to prevent and cure type 1 diabetes.

The DRC is currently raising funds for Joseph Lancman’s project to replace beta-cells, allowing recipients with type 1 diabetes to live a life free of daily insulin injections. Lancman is looking to raise $50K over the next 49 days to help expand his research.
"This discovery may allow us to generate new, replacement beta-cells directly in people with diabetes and bypass the safety issues associated with other approaches currently being investigated," says Lancman.
The DRC is also currently hosting Sangeeta Dhawan’s venture to raise funds to create better insulin producing cells with cell regeneration. Dhawan grew up in India and now resides in the United States, where she has watched both countries battle the health and cost effects of this diabetes epidemic. Having seen the global burden of the autoimmune disease, Dhawan's unique perspective resonates closely with World Health Day and its mission to raise awareness to beat diabetes. Her campaign to fund $40K has 27 days left and is currently 75% funded.
With one out of every hundred Americans being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, millions of children and adults struggle every day with the autoimmune disease. The DRC recognized that funding research to prevent, cure and minimize the complications of diabetes had significantly decreased, which is why they now provide a platform that helps raise awareness and funding.
The DRC is currently accepting project submissions, which will be reviewed by more than 80 leading diabetes experts, through their website. While the process of other funding agencies can run over one year, the DRC cuts their application down to as few as 12 weeks. Anyone can support the endeavors of Lancman, Dhawan and other DRC-run projects by donating anywhere from $1 to $10K or more as a tax-deductible donation.
