CSC-Led Alliance Wins $347.5 Million IT Diagnostic Imaging Contract With The UK National Health Service

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., May 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Computer Sciences Corporation today announced that a CSC-led alliance between CSC, Kodak and ComMedica has been awarded a 10-year, $347.5 million (196 million pounds sterling) information technology (IT) diagnostic imaging contract with the UK National Health Service (NHS). CSC estimates the value of its share of the award to be approximately $191.5 million (108 million pounds sterling).

Under the contract, the alliance will design, build and operate a new Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) across the West Midlands and North West regions of England.

The system is being established as part of the Department of Health’s $10.6 billion (6 billion pounds sterling) IT program that will help millions of patients receive treatment more quickly and efficiently. The new system will allow health professionals to store and mail images such as X-rays and scans electronically rather than having to print and file manually, enabling doctors to provide a faster diagnosis. Rather than having to physically transfer an X-ray or scan by hand from one hospital department to another, health professionals throughout the NHS will be able to access the information at the touch of a button.

“We are pleased to have been selected by the NHS to work on another key part of this exciting program,” said CSC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Van B. Honeycutt. “This agreement enlarges CSC’s global healthcare base and represents a significant expansion of our work for the NHS.”

“This is another crucial part of the national program which will make a real impact to clinicians and to patients,” said Guy Hains, president of CSC’s UK operations. “By combining the NHS’ innovation already evident in these regions with the expertise and experience of CSC and our alliance members, we are confident in our ability to deliver a service that will be second-to- none.”

The principal CSC alliance members in the PACS project are Kodak, which will provide the Computed Radiography Systems, Radiology Information Systems and Archiving Systems that store radiology images, and ComMedica, which will provide software that captures, distributes and manages digital medical diagnostic images. Both organizations will provide professional services to support the CSC deployment team.

“CSC and its alliance members have worked with us to deliver the best possible value and first class performance,” said Richard Granger, director general of NHS IT. “The new system will help doctors do what they do best -- treating patients -- and will provide NHS users with a first-class, 21st century service. This ground-breaking deal is a great example of how investment in IT infrastructure is helping to deliver better patient care.”
