College of Emergency Physicians Release: Study Results Show Hospitals Lose Millions As Emergency Patients Wait Hours To Be Moved Into Hospital Beds

NEW YORK, Dec. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- This is a MultiVu special report:

A recent study published in Annals of Emergency Medicine showed moving emergency patients faster into hospital beds can generate more revenue for the hospital. Emergency medical staff could care for more people and therefore increase revenue to help hospitals provide charity care.

Of the 904 patients examined in the study, ninety-one percent waited longer than three hours in the emergency department until they could be moved into a hospital bed.

The study also found that patients who sought care on weekdays waited an average of two hours longer than those seeking care on weekends. One reason researchers say is because hospital beds are being reserved for elective surgery patients.

Doctor Judd Hollander, study author:

“With decreasing funds to provide care for the 44 million uninsured patients, it’s critical that hospitals find ways to expedite patient care. We really need to get the already admitted patients upstairs into their hospital beds so we can free up more emergency department beds. We need to get those patients seen before they walk out of the waiting room unseen.”
