Bar Harbor, Maine, Aug. 30, 2012 – The Jackson Laboratory has hired Clare Tully, an attorney with wide-ranging expertise in business and nonprofit sectors, as its new senior director for human resources, health and safety.

Tully joins the nonprofit Laboratory from the law firm of Bernstein Shur, based in Portland, Maine, where she has worked since 2007.

Prior to that time, Tully worked for more than a decade for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) and was a senior vice president of the National Audubon Society.

Tully received a cum laude bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University, a Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan School of Social Work, and her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.

“Clare brings a strong passion for the Laboratory’s mission and a background that includes a broad spectrum of experience that will be critical to developing and supporting our workforce for the future,” said Charles E. Hewett, Ph.D., Jackson’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “For an institution as complex and fast-growing as ours, that’s vital.”

Tully, who will begin her job on Oct. 1, succeeds Mae Landesman, who is retiring after nearly 15 years of progressively greater responsibility at the Laboratory. During Landesman’s tenure, the Laboratory grew from 800 employees to nearly 1,400, as it expanded its Bar Harbor campus and launched The Jackson Laboratory—West in Sacramento, Calif., the new Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine in Farmington, Conn., and a planned facility in Ellsworth, Maine.

Tully will oversee all of the Laboratory’s human resource and environmental health and safety programs including recruiting, retention, and employee development.

“From its animal lab technicians to its scientists, the Laboratory’s employees advance the search for tomorrow’s cures every day,” Tully said. “I am honored and thrilled to use my experience and creativity to help them master the new challenges and opportunities that the Laboratory’s rapid growth and extraordinary vision for the future will present.”

The Jackson Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit biomedical research institution based in Bar Harbor, Maine. Its mission is to discover the genetic basis for preventing, treating and curing human disease and to enable research and education for the global biomedical community.
