Applied Photophysics Release: Established UK Company Chooses Beverly For Its First North American Facility

Applied Photophysics joins biotech community at Cummings Center

BEVERLY, August 28, 2015 – United Kingdom-based Applied Photophysics (APL) will open its new North American Demonstration Lab at Cummings Center in September. The 2,400-square-foot space is the global firm’s first North American location.

Applied Photophysics develops and manufactures high-performance modern spectrometry equipment for the life sciences industry. Established in 1971 by Lord George Porter and the Royal Institution of Great Britain, it is headquartered near London.

APL chose Massachusetts, and Beverly’s Cummings Center in particular, because of the number and variety of biotech and biopharma companies in the area, according to David Gregson, CEO of Applied Photophysics.

“Being close to so many potential customers is a real advantage,” said Gregson. “Above and beyond that, though, there is an infrastructure at Cummings Center that makes it easy to integrate and do business. Support and guidance has been offered freely at every step of the way. We are delighted with our choice of location for the new laboratory.”

APL plans a grand opening for its Demonstration Lab, on September 10. At the same time, it will launch its qCD product series, which is designed to help develop novel biotherapeutics drugs.

“We look forward to having Applied Photophysics as part of the dynamic biotech cluster at Cummings Center,” said Cummings Properties leasing officer Jamie McManus, who worked directly with the firm on the lease.

“With about 50 life sciences firms, occupying more than 450,000 square feet at this campus alone, we are accustomed to accommodating the unique needs of this industry.”

Essex County, where Cummings Center is located, is among the top 15 counties in the country for biotechnology research and development jobs, according to a 2014 industry report from the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council.

Recently named one of North of Boston Business’ 25 Best Places to Work, Cummings Center offers first-class, fully built out space for a wide range of commercial uses, including executive offices, healthcare facilities, laboratories, retail storefronts, industrial space, and more.
