PALO ALTO, Calif., Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Technology Ventures, a bi-coastal venture capital firm that invests in technology and healthcare companies, today announced that clinical cardiologist, Richard L. Popp, M.D., is joining ATV’s healthcare team as a technology partner. In this role, Dr. Popp will evaluate opportunities and provide investment recommendations.
“Within ATV’s healthcare practice, we have assembled an exceptional team of individuals who possess distinct insights and experiences to ensure we have a well-rounded team,” said healthcare general partner Mike Carusi. “We draw on our cross-section of experts to facilitate research and deliberate on a company’s merits, before we add a company to our portfolio. We are thrilled to have Dr. Popp on board to contribute his substantial knowledge and expertise in clinical medicine to this process.”
In addition to his role at ATV, Dr. Popp will continue to hold his position as a professor of medicine in the division of cardiovascular diseases at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, where he also is the director of Ethics and Policy in BioDesign. In this capacity, Dr. Popp leads the Innovation Fellowship program that works with engineering and medical students to aid them in developing new healthcare technologies. Dr. Popp also holds the position of principal medical consultant for both Agilent Labs and HP Labs.
Dr. Popp came to Stanford University early in the 1970s. He pioneered the technique of applying ultrasound technology to detect heart disease, a procedure that continues to be the most important means to identify heart problems today. Dr. Popp has held several senior positions in his career, including the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Stanford University School of Medicine, as well as the president of the American College of Cardiology in 1997-98, and the chairman of the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Cardiovascular Diseases Subspecialty Board.
“The constraint facing healthcare technology opportunities isn’t ideas -- which continuously arise -- it’s entrepreneurial assistance,” said Dr. Richard L. Popp. “I look forward to melding my clinical experience with the ATV team, a distinguished group of venture investment professionals with singularly strong operations and go-to-market skills.”
