Stay Current in Evolving Healthcare Environment
Globally recognized change agents to address critical issues and emerging trends
Chicago/Sept. 24, 2018--Health care is undergoing a global revolution, with the practices of pathology and laboratory medicine at its center. To meet the challenge and to stay current with the latest advances, many new and emerging skills will soon be required. On Oct. 3-5, in Baltimore, the ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting will bring together globally recognized change agents to address critical issues and emerging trends affecting health care today and beyond.
Guest Speakers
Olympic gold medalist and cancer survivor Shannon Miller will discuss the role that diagnostics played in her cancer treatment during the General Session on Wednesday, Oct. 3. The only U.S. gymnast to win two World All-Around titles, she is also the first American female to medal in the individual all-around of a non-boycotted Olympics, and the most accomplished gymnast, male or female, in U.S. Olympic history.
In January 2011, although physically and mentally strong and outwardly healthy, she was diagnosed at age 33 with a rare form of ovarian cancer. A baseball size tumor was successfully removed, followed up with an aggressive chemotherapy regimen. For the first full year after her successful treatment, Shannon was acclimating to a “new normal.” Shannon is now cancer-free and remains open and public about her diagnosis and treatment, advocating for early detection.
On Oct. 4, global health expert Thomas J. Bollyky, JD, guest speaker at the Scientific General Session, will shine the spotlight on global health in the future. In his upcoming book, “Plagues and the Paradox of Progress: Why the World Is Getting Healthier in Worrisome Ways,” Bollyky, a senior fellow for global
health, economics and development at the Council on Foreign Relations and adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University, explains how historic health achievements are remaking a world that is both worrisome and full of opportunities. He discusses the idea that whether the peril or promise of that progress prevails depends on what we, as a society, do next.
Core Education
Education is at the heart of the ASCP 2018 Annual Meeting. Whether you are a pathologist, laboratory professional or resident, there is something for everyone at the ASCP Annual Meeting. Leveraging innovative, customizable education, the meeting will support attendees’ current practices and prepare them for future success, help them to develop skills that can be applied on the job today, show them the practices that will shape the profession tomorrow and set them on course to lead the direction of diagnostic medicine in the future.
