Lygos Joins BioMADE Network to Advance Sustainable and Reliable Bioindustrial Manufacturing Technologies

BERKELEY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Lygos, Inc., a vertically integrated provider of safe and sustainable specialty ingredients, today announced that it has joined the Bioindustrial Manufacturing And Design Ecosystem (BioMADE), a nonprofit Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII) and network of public-private entities created by the Engineering Biology Research Consortium (EBRC). BioMADE is working together with Lygos and other manufacturers and innovators to advance bioindustrial manufacturing technologies while simultaneously enhancing the structure of the entire innovation ecosystem across the country.

BioMADE was recently awarded $87 million from the Department of Defense to promote and secure long-term US biotechnology innovation. The collaborative institute will develop predictive downstream processing and scale-up to help accelerate prototyping capabilities and reduce the time, risk, and cost of bringing bio-based products, such as Lygos’ organic acids and cannabinoids, to commercial scale.

“We at the EBRC could not have led this team without the critical insights and involvement of our partner institutions, and their commitment to the vision of a thriving public-private solution to advance domestic biomanufacturing,” said Douglas Friedman, Executive Director of EBRC and CEO of BioMADE. “Turning to the future, we look forward to an inclusive and comprehensive ecosystem of institutions across the country, unified with the goal of advancing US biomanufacturing capabilities, creating products that are as high performing as they are environmentally sustainable.”

“For more than a decade, Lygos has been at the forefront of its field, enabling customers to create sustainable products that can help solve the world’s environmental challenges,” said Nick Ohler, PhD, Chief Technology Officer of Lygos. “We are looking forward to partnering with BioMADE to help increase bioprocess piloting capacity to help meet the burgeoning demand for the development of bio-advantaged solutions designed to replace toxic legacy petrochemistry processes, reclaim local manufacturing, and revive industrial bioinnovation.”
