Bio-Images Research Ltd. to Present at the Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress 2010
Published: Oct 13, 2010
Over the last year Bio-Images have used the nuclear imaging technique, gamma scintigraphy, along with their expertise in drug development and formulation science, to assess the in vivo properties of a controlled release capsule system (the ‘hydrophilic sandwich’ capsule), a solubility enhanced liquid ibuprofen solution and time-delayed release tablet systems. For these gamma scintigraphic studies, the formulations were radiolabelled with a gamma emitting radioisotope, allowing visualisation of their behaviour from outside the body using a gamma camera. Studies like these allow informed decision making in formulation development and are valuable in solving early issues–such as dose dumping and food effects?with ‘problem’ formulations.
In addition to recent work in gamma scintigraphy, Bio-Images have also carried out exploratory work in spectral imaging and will give an overview of this in a poster presentation at the conference. Spectral imaging makes use of the differences in spectroscopic properties of materials and can detect tiny nuances between images, for example differences in blood flow in surface capillaries.
Professor Clive Wilson, Chief Scientist, commented: “Imaging science remains a cornerstone in formulation development and over the past five years, Bio-Images Research has secured alliances with key partners to provide wider services for clients. The Bio-Imaging Centre has been extremely busy over the past year and as a consequence has undergone significant growth, with the employment of a bigger scientific workforce. This is remarkable against the scenario of a general contraction in the industry over the past three years. We are delighted to be attending the AAPS meeting again this year, and to present the diversity of our work to peers and colleagues from the international pharmaceutical community.”
The Pharmaceutical Sciences World Congress is held every 3-4 years and this year will run in conjunction with the annual meeting and exposition of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, where Bio-Images is also an exhibitor. Bio-Images clinical site staff will be available to discuss their recent research at booth number 1955.
Bio-Images Research Ltd. is a CRO which was originally founded in October 2000 as a spin out from the University of Strathclyde, and is based in Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Bio-Images specialises in early phase clinical studies in volunteers and patient groups, using gamma scintigraphy to monitor the behaviour of dosage forms in the body. This non-invasive imaging technique can be used to monitor oral, nasal, pulmonary and ophthalmic formulations. Bio-Images conducts all studies in accordance with ICH-GCP and is a licensed GMP manufacturing site.
